llms.txt generator

Create an llms.txt for your site from its sitemap and home page: the site name, a short summary and your main pages grouped by section. Copy the result, tidy the link titles and upload it to the root of your site.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a proposal from September 2024 for a Markdown file at the root of a site, for example example.com/llms.txt. It gives language models a short summary of the site and links to the pages that matter most, in a format that is easy to read without menus, scripts or ads.

It is a proposal, not an official standard, and AI companies have not all said whether they use it. Adding one is quick and does no harm, which is why many sites publish it alongside robots.txt and a sitemap. Read more in our guide What is llms.txt and how to create one.

Questions

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

At the root of your domain, next to robots.txt, so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Serve it as plain text or Markdown.

Where do the link titles come from?

From the addresses in your sitemap. Rename them into clear page names before you publish, and keep only the pages that help someone understand your site.

What if my site has no sitemap?

The generator then follows the links on your home page instead, so it still finds your main pages.
