Redirect map generator
Moving to a new site or URL structure? Paste the old URLs and the new ones. Every old URL gets its best new match with a confidence score, the doubtful ones are flagged, and the rules come out ready to paste.

This check is the plan_redirects tool in the free OnPage.dev MCP server. Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor once, then ask in your own words.
We moved to new.example.com. Map these old URLs to the new sitemap and write the nginx rules.

How URLs are matched
- The same path on the new site is a sure match.
- The same last part of the address, like
/running-tips, comes next. - Otherwise the words in both paths are compared, ignoring dates, numbers and file extensions.
- No good match? The URL is flagged so you can pick a close page or let it return 410.
Check the flagged rows by hand: they are the ones that lose traffic when they land on the wrong page. After going live, run the old URLs through the redirect checker with the new ones as expected, to confirm every redirect is one 301 hop.
Questions
Why 301 and not 302?
A 301 tells search engines the move is permanent, so the old page passes its rankings to the new one. A 302 says the move is temporary.
Should every old URL redirect to the home page?
No. Search engines treat mass redirects to the home page as soft 404s. Send each URL to the closest matching page, or let pages that are truly gone return 410.
